The Award-Winning Ford F-150 Lightning

Ford vehicles have been wowing drivers for over 100 years, and they’re not stopping now. Ford’s first-ever electric pickup truck just won 2023 MotorTrend Truck of the Year by unanimous decision. One big reason for the award is the new all-electric F-150’s appeal to the existing truck market.

Pickup truck owners love their vehicles and aren’t as likely to make the switch from their favorite gas-powered model to its all-electric counterpart. Because of this, changing their minds hasn’t been easy.

The Ford Motor Company may have figured out the formula with the new F-150 Lightning. Rather than incorporating huge radical changes, Ford has equipped the F-150 Lightning with enough innovation to ensure a fossil fuel-free, emissions-free powertrain, but not so much that it scares away potential buyers.

The Genius of the 2023 F-150 Lightning

The genius of the new Ford F-150 Lightning is that it doesn’t look radically different from a gas-powered F-150. Pickup truck owners love their pickups, so why make drastic changes? Ford’s attitude towards a new EV design wasn’t to make a huge transformation, but to give truck lovers a viable electric alternative.

That not withstanding, the F-150 Lightning outclasses existing all-electric rivals even though it’s physically larger and shares the same aerodynamics with a standard pickup. The Lightning outclasses the Rivian R1T in EPA efficiency ratings and MPG, while using a slightly smaller battery, and taking only minutes longer to charge.

The Lightning also outperforms electric rivals in payload capacity, with a larger and more versatile bed and a roomier interior. The GMC Hummer EV pickup, the only other electric truck on the market, doesn’t even compare, being the least efficient electric vehicle overall.
