In Florida, it gets a bit hotter than the rest of the country, and it stays hot for a good part of the year. That may be a benefit for snowbirds escaping the cold, but it can wreak havoc with your car.

As you know, the heat kills batteries, but did you know it's also hard on oil?

Engine oil must withstand high pressures and shear, maintaining a protective film that is the only thing standing in between metal and more metal parts. It keeps friction low, and the engine cool. It removes deposits of sludge, and prevents rust.

Extreme heat can make it lose viscosity, thinning out and deteriorating the oil until it no longer does its job.

In a recent series of tests performed independently by AAA, synthetic motor oil out-performed conventional oil by an average of 47 percent. That means 47 percent better protection for your engine, especially in extreme temperatures.

According to AAA, that benefit makes it well worth the slightly higher price, which averages out to only $5 more per month than a conventional oil change.

Do you think it's worth it? Let us know if you want to switch to synthetic at your next service appointment at Rountree-Moore Ford Lincoln.
